Its also amazing how many people use our beautiful beaches as ashtrays.

S
aturday, June 13th started with lots of early morning activity at my home in preparation of facing the crowds on the beach for our 2nd Beach Cleanup for 2009.  This was going to be my first time as the leader of the Beach Cleanup and as luck would have it, the shuttle launch had been scrubbed the night before so there was no traffic, there was no parking problem and the beach was ours to command, clean, and control.  First, I went to the beach about 6:30 AM to locate a beachside landmark for Harding Avenue so we would know when to  turn around and head back to our starting point at Arthur Avenue.

I then arrived at the McDonalds across from the Radisson about 6:30 AM to eat a light breakfast and to wait for the other team members:  Audrey Grayson, Lynn Pemberton and Janice Denard.  While waiting I realized not many people received the scrub notice the night before because McDonalds was continuously packed with people!  We left McDonalds about 8 AM to go to Arthur Avenue to begin our volunteer work.

Upon arrival we noticed our leaning, Adopt-A-Shore sign.  Someone must have hit it when clearing some of the greenery in the area.  Immediately after “suiting up” we found a $1 bill and we knew we were in for a really good day because as I have mentioned, there was no traffic, there was no parking problem and the beach was ours to command, clean, and control!

We went beachside and started to clean as we walked the beach.  The weather was quite warm and we could tell the day was going to be hot!

Please take a look at all of our pictures for a “snapshot” of our activities, pictures of the result of our hard work (collected about 40 pounds of trash), pictures of beautiful plants and flowers we enjoyed, and pictures of a street marker located beachside for Harding Avenue (what a surprise)!

Two days after the Beach Cleanup I asked each of the volunteers “What did you find interesting, different or unusual?"  Their observations are provided, here, and were also sent to the Keep Brevard Beautiful organization.

Per Audrey Grayson:  The number of different stories going on, e.g., there were old couples leisurely walking together, young couples laying supine on beach towels soaking up the rays, and a beautiful pregnant woman who was walking at a steady pace,  swinging her arms as she walked.  One might assume that she was out getting her exercise.  She was staring at the sand as she walked as if she were in deep thought. (Could have been a great Kodak moment).

And of course the little known fact for me is that there are several homeless people who sleep on the beach.  I didn’t see them but they leave their bedding and other belongings slightly hidden among the tall grasses.

It’s also amazing how many people use our beautiful beaches as ashtrays.

Lynn Pemberton:  Found two expended fireworks….and one baby wrinkle shell still hinged together….hard to believe it could withstand the force of the waves to make to the shore intact…thanks for the camaraderie…enjoyed the day too.
Per Janice Denard:
The things I found, animal remains (creepy...), seeing homeless people sleeping in the bushes, different types of flowers that seems to not come from that area, overall it was a very nice day and scenic background that made picking up trash enjoyable, and also many people thanks us for keeping their beach clean.

Remember that $1 bill we found immediately after “suiting up” for the day’s journey?   Well, at the end of the day I “reinvested” the $1 by purchasing buckets to make future Beach Cleanups easier with the use of buckets (instead of trash bags).  I also restocked our supply of baby wipes, water and sanitizer.

By the way, did I forget to mention the heat?  Please join in the fun by supporting our next Beach Cleanup on Saturday, July 18th.  We’ll get an earlier start this time by meeting at McDonalds between 6:45 – 7:15 AM so that we can start cleaning the beach at 7:30 A.M.
